Lock Bumping

You may have seen this report or one like it on the news last week. If not, you’ll likely be alarmed. It’s a technique used by locksmiths and, unfortunately, bad guys to illegally enter your home without so much as a broken window pane. Called “lock bumping,” it’s something you need to be aware of.

Sadly, the internet is abuzz with “how-to” articles on creating “bump keys” and how to use them. They reportedly work on an estimated 80 percent of door locks so you’ll want to make sure yours is “bump proof.” Check with a reputable locksmith for guidance.

Wow. I never heard of this. Is this for real? Everyone should be told about this. How come we never heard about any breakins using this on the news or in the newpaper?

Obviously, this has always been possible with the standard lock. Prior to internet media, I would assume that the majority of law abiding citizens and criminal minds alike didn’t know about this method. The criminals that did know were probably those with some locksmith background etc. In days past, the odds of falling victim to this method . . . probably slim and none. This particular mass media topic will evoke a big change. Expect EVERY criminal to adopt this method. Likewise expect every lock company to reinvent the lock.

Is this real? Do I need a locksmith to check my door?

Yes Ruthie, it's real. If you're concerned, yes, I'd suggest having a locksmith check your locks. High-end locks are probably safe, but if you live in an apartment or older house with simple lock-sets, a safety check is probably a good investment.
