What Would You Save?

house_on_fire.jpgThe subject comes up from time to time and recently the question was again posed : If your house was on fire and your family and pets were safe, what things would you want to save?

It got me thinking that I should prepare a list in case, God forbid, I find myself confronted with such an emergency. I doubt I’d have the wherewithal to evaluate priorities, so a list I’d given some prior thought to would certainly come in handy.

Everyone’s first answer, I’d wager, is “photos” and the same thought immediately crossed my mind. Fortunately, I keep our prints and slides in one drawer (and a closet shelf) while the rest are digitally stored on an external hard drive. Note to self: Off site storage!

While I ponder my choices and prepare my list, I thought it might be a good exercise for you as well. So let me know - you can use “comments” to this post or email - which things you’d want, more than any others, to save and why. I’ll post the replies (first names only.)

I'm one of those that would grab my photo albums. They are precious to me, filled with memories that, without them, would fade over time. Memories cannot be replaced. If everything else burned down, I would still have my memories.

I have a painting done of my grandfather in his uniform that I treasure above all other posessions. I would save that.

I'd save my Porsche Turbo from the garage. Everything else can be replaced, but not this. It's my sweetheart. I have MANY fond memories in her.

I would save all the little handmade cards and trinkets my three children have made for me in school. Each is a treasure. I keep them in a box at the top of my closet, under old hats and scarves, and every now and then I open the box and remember when I received each little blessing. My heart overflows and the tears always come, but that box would be the one thing I would save.

My computer. EVERYTHING is in it. I would be lost if something happened to it. On the way out, I would also grab the framed picture of Linda (my girlfriend).
