Notice Anything Wrong in this Spelling Bee Photo?
The 2007 Scripps National Spelling Bee was held May 30-31 at the Grand Hyatt Washington. The nation’s largest and longest running spelling bee was won by Evan O’Dorney, a 13-year-old speller from Danville, California. We congratulate Evan and all the contestants for their accomplishments.
What caught my eye, though, was a photo of young David Brokaw who, advancing to the third round, correctly spelled “marathon.” Notice anything unusual in the photo? Look closely…
David’s sponsor, Catapult Online, is the nation’s leading provider of live, at-home tutoring for NCLB supplemental educational services (SES). I suspect the Scripps organization provided the sponsorship signs.

OMG! How embarrassing for someone! And at a spelling bee no less!
The bee finals were broadcast live on a.m radio. I listened for a while but it was like watching paint dry. Surely no one but parents actually attend.
I noted what was "wrong" in the photo. I won't be the spoiler but how embarrassiong for the company sponsoring the contest. Accidents happen, but this one is a collossal faux pas!
Amazing how a single keying transposition can, under the right circumstances, be "heard around the world."
Scripps thanks you, Catapult thanks you, the Bee thanks you, the Brokaws thank you and I thank you.
How can the organizer of a national spelling bee manage such a huge oversight? They need to get one of the kids to check them before they send stuff to print. And have they heard of "spell check"?
I felt so foolish not seeing it until about the third time I looked! Ironic, isn't it?
