Miss Teen USA South Carolina Gets a Do-Over

I suppose you’ve all had a chance to chuckle (wonder?) at Caitlin Upton’s convoluted answer to her pageant question (see yesterday’s post) - half of the top vids on YouTube are either of her, about her or making fun of her.

NBC’s Today decided to capitalize on all the hoopla by giving her a “do-over.” Enjoy…

A very composed, if well rehearsed, answer among friendlies.

I still think she is in the 20% who can't find the US on a map.

I agree with Sara and Ken's earlier comments. And I think this appearance proves the point.

Jeez... Could they bend over any further to be gentle with her? They are just reinforcing the stereotype that she fits.

Oh that's right, we need to give her a star for showing up and "trying."

Despite having the Today crew pat her embarrassed little fanny, she did little to redeem herself, such as.

Come on, leave the girl alone! OK, she skewered her answer. But she is only 18 and was nervous. Haven't you ever been in front of a huge group and completely lost your train of thought? It is like an "out-of-body" experience with you looking down at yourself and realizing that you can't run, can't hide.

And yes, I am sure she had time to rehearse her answer this time. But if she was your daughter, wouldn't you want people to stop roasting her?

"Rehearsed" is exactly the word, I'm betting. She probably has an agent putting the right spin on this and that entire charade of an interview was staged. Why else would the Today show waste time with this? NO news day is this slow.
She's set. I see it now: Playboy spread by November, a book of her experience by Spring 08 and then back to Wal Mart.

Seriously, public speaking is the worst. An survey was once taken of what the 5 most terrifying things are to people. Death was #5, public speaking was #1.

OK I can feel sympathy for the poor young thing, but she entered a pageant where she was expected to answer questions. This is supposed to demonstrate her poise (and maybe a little knowledge.) She blew it. It was a trainwreck!

Let's be honest. The pageant is to choose the best looking girl in a bikini. The "poise" thing is to give it an aire of legitimacy. And she is a looker. Even after her abstract semi-answer, she still finished 3rd runner-up! We don't seem to care if they appear dumb as a doornail as long as they score high on looks.

Honesty hurts? Too bad.
