28 Places To See Before You Die

lifelist_serengheti.jpg

“We are all of us resigned to death: it’s life we aren’t resigned to,” novelist Graham Greene once wrote. A growing number of Americans of all ages are embracing that idea by renewing a resolve to live life to its fullest. “Life Lists” - lists of things we want to do or see before we take that final step - have become increasingly popular. Dawn and I have such a list and try to check a few things or places off each year.

This month’s issue of Smithsonian magazine features an article on the subject that includes photos of 28 places its editors believe everyone should include on their own “lists.” And here’s the bottom line: Whether you visit only a couple of these destinations or all 28, your life will be enriched by the experience.

What a wonderful idea! Since you said you have a list like this, how do you find time to go to the places you have on it?

We make going somewhere or doing something from the list every year (more if possible) a priority, Understand, our list isn't all exotic destinations; some are relatively close, even within driving range. And some are pretty easy. For instance, we had always wanted to walk across the Golden Gate Bridge. So we did. We want to see the Grand Canyon. So we will, maybe even this year. It's not hard if the list holds a place of importance.

Go for it!

I need a list like this. So you make the list and then what, just schedule a place to go every year? Sounds simple and beats looking for ideas when you are a month away from vacation.

Think I'll try it!

They picked some great places to go, huh? Great photos!

Beautiful photographs of places I would love to see!

So all I need is a list?

Yes, that and a solid commitment to keep checking things off. Do it!

I have started my list. Leslie and I have 10 places (a couple from this list) and 10 things we have to do and see. If we think of more, we will add them and rearrange the list by what we think is most important.

This year we plan on seeing the Orcas in BC up close and personal. I will send you pictures if any come out.

I suspect that the Serengheti is on your list. Am I right?

We have started a list. Well, we have two places on it so far while we try to figure out where we would really want to go first. But we started and we are looking forward to checking something off!

My list has to include all the places shown here. I know they are professional photos but they really do make you want to go there!

I love the picture with all the zebras!! I see why so many people marvel at the Serengheti. I have started a list and this is on it,

I think why most people don't have a list like this is because we all make travel plans like where will we go for vacation this year. That isn't it. It should be, I want to see Niagra Falls. Make a plan and go.

I feel energized! I'm going to see the Serengheti!!

Beautiful photography, makes you want to visit all those places.

Like you have said before, lists are only useful if you prioritize them and do what is on them. So if you have one, you have to commit to using it.

Hey, the movie "The Bucket List" is like this! Have to go see it this weekend!

What people tend to do is wait until they run out of time before starting their bucket list. We all need to make our lists and start doing them long before the end of our road is in sight.

Oh, my readers are so wise! Don't forget to send me photos from your travels! Maybe holding up a sign that says "I love IM" or "Hi Doug" or something. As you're petting the white rhino.
