Pencil Sculptures - Jennifer Maestre

Jennifer Maestre is a self-taught artist, at least in her current medium of choice - pencil sculptures. She has also produced works in beads, nails and pins, but it was her works made entirely of sharpened pencils that first caught my attention and made me want to share her work here.

Her pencil sculptures are made by drilling holes in one inch long sections of pencils and sewing them together using a sculptural beading technique called “peyote stitch”. Take a walk through her site. I think you’ll find the work unique if not inspiring.

Thank you for posting about Jennifer Maestre. I think her work is wonderful, a truly unique niche in the art world. I met her at a showing in MA and bought one of her pieces which stands proudly on our cocktail table. It never ceases to attract comments from visitors who cannot believe it is made of pencils! She is a wonderful person and an artist extraordinaire!

I guess art is in the eye of the beholder. I know it is art but I can't see it in my living room. Have to respect the work and skill involved and I am sure it is perfect for a lot of other people.

How does someone come up with an idea like this? They just wake up one morning and think "Hey! I could make stuff out of pencils". I never think of stuff like that.

I think it is definitelt art and very cool. Some of the pieces are things I would put in my home (if I thought I could afford them).

You would never be at a loss to find a pencil if you had one of these!

I don't know how big this is but maybe it could be used for a pencil holder.
