Friday Flyby - Think You're a Good Pilot?
Talk about a rudder throw! Mike sent this with the notation, “And you think you’re a good pilot… whew!”
Impressive, but to be honest, Mike, I think it’s “CG” trickery. For one thing, right after the starboard wing “falls off”, the plane begins to spiral (counterclockwise) “into” the remaining wing which, I believe, would be aerodynamically impossible. In addition, and this is purely speculative, the plane looks a little “wrong” when it first lands, a little too “CG”. I’ll do some research into it, but you’re a pilot; what do you think?
Anyone else have an opinion?
It would appear that our suspicions were on target, at least according to the good folks at snopes…

I hadn't noticed the backwards rotation after the dropped wing before and I believed it was real, right up to the landing which looked more like an RC model airplane and then a video disolve to the real one. Watch the landing, it looks pretty fake.
Yea it looks pretty fake all right, especially since you should be able to see the rudder moving to fight the spin. Definitely fake.
It bounces on landing like a toy. That is because it is an RC model. During roll-out, the camera blurs and the real plane is substituted, turning to the left so we can't see that the wing is "not" missing on the real plane.
You're right Doug. The creator of the video made a mistake! He has the plane spining the WRONG way after losing its wing. The remaining wing creates lift so it should spin around the absent wing.
The videographer keeps asking where is the right wing?
It is engaged in stealing another presidential election!
Omg is this for real?
Gee, I bought it completely but I watched it again and I agree the landing looks fake. I'm not so sure the rest is fake though.
Hey, welcome back! Hope you are all rested and back to the keyboard!
I have to inject some flught wisdom for all the naysayers. Flying and landing a plane with just one wing is possible and has been done before. I'm not so sure whether the pilot used the rudder correctly or did everything right, but the landing appears to me to be possible as shown. But I agree the landing here looks fake, eith cgi or an RC . Still pretty good video though. Bet it fools a lot of non-pilots!
Yes Jona and there really is a Santa Claus :-D
I think all real aircraft are required to display an N number. This one doesn't have one.
I think this could be real. I know people like to call every death defying video on youtube fake, but it turns out some of them are real.
