Movie Review: Wanted
Dawn and I saw “Wanted” (James McAvoy, Angelina Jolie, Morgan Freeman) Sunday. It was just released June 27th so I won’t be a spoiler. Suffice it to say that Angelina Jolie is stunning as always. That said, I gave the movie just three stars.
First, you should know that the film is based on Mark Millar’s dark comic (excuse me, graphic novel) series. Without giving away too much, it tells the tale of an apathetic nobody’s (read disaffected, cube-dwelling drone’s) transformation into an unparalleled enforcer of justice. It mixes a little of The Matrix, a bit of X-Men and Da Vinci Code, and a splash of Hellraiser, and delivers a fun, albeit reheated, ride.
The result straddles the narrow line between silly and plausible, using ample visual effects to trick you into lowering your expectations and settling for little more than a fun ride, and then hits you with plot twists that make you think, “Whoa.” Or at least, “Huh?”
The plot has its share of gaping holes, but for those who like shutting off their brains but discovering they might be thinking deeply anyway, Wanted is a worthy diversion. It’s not nearly as complex as it pretends to be, but did I mention that Angelina Jolie is stunning? Just don’t bring the kids (bloody violence, language) and don’t drink a big soda; the movie is an hour and 50 minutes long.

Your right about Angelina, but how can you not rate this movie higher? It is nonstop action from start to finish, the special effects are awesome, and the plot is full of surprises. To me its right up with Matrix.
I agree with Doug. The plot was thin with the twists made up as it rolled along. I found myself asking "how is that going to be explained?" and then, as though the writers had the same problem, they would just make up something convenient but unbelievable like sticking bubble gum in the cracks as they appeared. Granted there were segments that worked well, but then they would toss in something out of place and I would say "give me a break". We did enjoy the movie but it could have/should have been a lot better.
We liked it but we thought the hero was TOO much a dork in the beginning. Plus we didn't believe he could have been trained to his final awesomeness in just 2 weeks and the beatings he took with the brass knuckles and all would have crushed his face more than just a bloody nose and lip.
But we still liked it. The cgi were great! The actors were believable (especially Angelina who was HOT!) Tears and toil. Cool.
You have to remember, this is based on a comic series. In the comic, Wes was portrayed exactly like that. I agree that it comes across better in print than on film and they could have made him a little more realistic in the beginning, but they tried to be true to the genre.
The 2-weeks of training is believable because Wes is a closet super hero and has powers that only needed awakening. Same with the lack of broken face bones plus remember the magic milk bath that sped up recovery.
It does have a few weak points I admit but for comic junkies it is near perfect.
Isn't it interesting how the best movies today are made from old comic books? Hollywood has found an untapped resource for movie ideas. Good thing, they were making a lot of real junk.
Can hardly wait for the Dark Knight!!!
Do the comic book companies and writers get some kind of payment for using the characters in movies? How much of the total do you think they get?
I never read the comic series so I don't know where it is supposed to go next. I would expect a sequel or two if it does well at the box office but what can the last remaining member of the Fraternity do after blowing up the loom? And after exposing the whole loom thing's exposure to corruption, Wes remaining the lone loom follower seems unlikely. Anyone read the series that can give some hints?
Awesome move!!! Go see it!!! Angelina Jolie rocks!!!
Can someone explain to me why Fox killed herself when she killed all the fraternity members? Now she can't be in the sequel.
I loved this movie!! It is a fantastic action flik!! If you haven't seen it yet, go see it!!
She kills herself because she completely believes in "fate" and how the loom keeps everything in balance. She knows that the loom tagged her and so she knows that she has to die.
Comic book creators, writers and publishers all get in on the action by selling the film rights.
There will probably be at least one sequel.
I cant believe this movie got a decent review from anybody. I couldn't wait for it to end. It was complete **** and a horrible mix of Fight Club, The Hulk and The Matrix. Definitely not worth it. Wait till it is free On Demand.
So hunka you stayed for the whole thing even though you hated it and then you recommend it as long as it is free? Your gripe is that some of the plot has been used in other movies? There are only so many possible plots and most have been used over and over. Get over yourself.
"Gaping holes?" That is an understatement.
Isn't a "fraternity" a "brotherhood"? How is it that a key member is female?
Cause the brothers knew what they were doing.
We saw this last night and we LOVED IT!!! We both hope there will be a sequel.
When Morgan Freeman goes or stops making movies, there won't be anyone to take his place. He is the best!!
Aside from the beating up and all the blood, this was a pretty good movie. Not so good as The matrix, but still good. My husband likes anything with Angelia Jolie in it so give him some popcorn and he is a happy camper. I like to try to figure out what will happen next and I like a challenge. This wasn't that hard, but they did throw in some stuff that didn't follow logic, so no one could have guessed them ahead. All in all a good movie.
Your review was right on. I purposely did not read the comments so I wouldn't ruin it for myself. Good thing too since they would have spoilt it for me.
