Lilly McElroy Throws Herself at Men
Literally.
“Sometimes they catch me, sometimes they don’t,” says the 28-year old performance artist who approaches strangers on the spot — usually a bar — and literally hurls her body at them. Hilarious and poignant, the resulting photographs make you wish you had been there to see what happened after the shutter release.
A tour of her web site includes several such “moments” along with video montages of her hugging strangers or protecting a chalk drawn box on a busy city sidewalk from passersby who might otherwise step inside. It’s an unusual art form in which McElroy is expressing herself… and making people laugh.

I think seeing the instantaneous aftermath pictures of the lady NOT being caught would be far more entertaining.
Air McElroy. Looks fun!
There's art and then there's "art". I think this falls into the "art" category.
This looks like it could be interesting. Where should I hang out to get her to throw herself at me?
(shakes head)
The most interesting thing to me about this project is its psychological aspect - What the men might be thinking, the conversations that follow. Now THAT would be intriguing.
I like how she turns herself (a woman) into a projectile and the men into receptacles. Many layers of social commentary here.
I enjoyed the box on the sidewalk stunt more than the throwing her body at men in bars (video). Imagine walking along a busy city sidewalk and encountering this woman that won't let you pass unless you walk around her chalk box. THAT would screw up your day!
I think the "catchers" have to have been warned ahead of time, Otherwise, there would be head collisions, broken teeth, blood and gore, law suits.
Come on. How is this art?
It seems like today anything someone does they can call art. So I guess all the homeless people laying in doorways and beside buildings on busy city sidewalks are "artists" expressing their "art".
Let's settle the "is it art" question. She exhibits at the Thomas Robertello Gallery here in Chicago. She is educated in photography and has exhibited widely for several years. You can check out her resume here:

She is an artist.
So is simple. You do something unusual, photograph it, get a art gallery to hang the pictures, and that makes you an artist?
Pretty much (emphasis on "get an art gallery to exhibit and sell your work.)
I really like "Locations". She assumes the same position in each. Some people ignore her. It is a commentary on the times. She doesn't look like she is a victim of anything, more like she is napping. I love the people who stop to ask if she is alright. There is a touch of humanity left in us all.
I'm not even done my first espresso but this made me smile (usually unheard of this early in the a.m.). Thanks for sharing!
Let me get this straight. She goes into a bar, asks some guy if she can jump him while her boyfriend takes a picture (presumably after he signs model and liability releases), then has her boyfriend snap a shot as she leaps, (repeat in several bars), prints the photos, gets a gallery to exhibit them, and that qualifies as art and makes her an artist?
Yep.
Even better is having her boyfriend snap her laying on the ground in public places. Back in the day, the police would have rounded her up with the other vagrants and dropped her them off at the edge of town with a warning not to come back.
Our "art" and tolerance have sure evolved.
Art, like beauty, is in the eye of the beholder.
Awesome calf muscles.
I wish I had thought of this. All those men I threw myself at and no photographic evidence.
Maybe that is a good thing.
I wish I had thought if it when I was younger and more limber!!
I wonder if she makes a living at this or is she another "starving artist"?
