'The Middle Place' by Kelly Corrigan
First, let me apologize for my lack of posting since the $170M coronation inauguration of Barack Obama. I’ve been especially busy at work and the long hours have left me neither time nor energy for blogging. Besides, I’m still a little numb from the whole Obama thing.
But that’s not really the subject of this post. What I want to share with you today, even before I’ve read it, is a memoir by Kelly Corrigan titled The Middle Place. I already have several books in various stages of being read, so it’s not as though I need another. But this one sounds like one for the reading list.
I often choose books based on the writing style of the author. I enjoy the artful twist of a phrase, the perfectly connected words that so vividly paint a picture, as much — and sometimes more — than the story they weave. When I begin such a work, it’s hard for me to put it down, yet it may take me longer to finish simply because I pause often to digest, reread and sometimes marvel at the way something or someone is described. For me, what makes a story is how it’s told.
So as Dawn and I leafed through The Middle Place, we were at once taken by Corrigan’s writing style. We know little, if anything, about the story, yet we’re fairly certain we’ll enjoy the read. If you’re like us and appreciate the writing as much as the story it tells, read this excerpt and see what you think. We want to read more; you may as well.

This is a beautiful book. I recommend it highly :))
It is such an awesome book!
My dad has cancer (prostate) also and I felt like I could relate to everything the was written in the book.
I read the introduction aloud to a friend and was trilled at how the words flowed.
What a great book!
I give this book two thumbs up and five stars. It would make a wonderful gift for anyone who has been diagnosed with cancer, whether that is yourself or someone you know. I wouldn’t limit my recommendation to cancer patients/survivors, though; it is so well-written and deals with so many universal emotions that I think anyone would enjoy it.
I highly recommend this book if you are seeking insight into what it’s like to be diagnosed with breast cancer in your thirties, are seeking words that reflect your experience (no matter how different your background or life goals) or if you just enjoy a moving story, told well and with humour.
The Middle Place is a memoir that reads like a novel. While I think it was directed at women, anyone who enjoys good writing will enjoy it :)
Anyone learning to accept their own adulthood will find strength and humor in this wonderful book. I read it first, and then Jack read it. We both loved it!
I have seen this at Barnes & Noble, maybe I'll pick up a copy if its in paperback.
This looks like a good book. From what I have read, it's a memoir about how she dealt with her father's cancer, then her own, and how she grew up in the process. I read the prologue and the writing does look great. I will definitely pick up a copy. Thanks for the tip :)
Thanks for the post. The book was being hyped by Opra which is a guarantee to put in on the Best Seller lists. But the books she recommends are usually good ones, so I will read it.
The excerpt is beautiful. Is this her first book?
I believe Bush when he says he did his best, what he thought was best for the country, Obama may too, but his far left leanings (he was the most extremely left member of the Senate) scare me. If what he thinks is best for the country is socialism, then we are in for a bad run.
