A Soldier's Christmas
Steve Imbesi, one of my scuba diving buddies, sent me this Christmas poem a year or two ago. It circulates via email around this time every year, usually incorrectly attributed. It’s a wonderful poem by Michael Marks that deserves another read by us all.
A SOLDIER’S CHRISTMAS by Michael Marks
The embers glowed softly and, in their dim light,
I gazed round the room and I cherished the sight.
My wife was asleep, her head on my chest,
my daughter beside me, angelic in rest.
Outside the snow fell, a blanket of white
transforming the yard to a winter delight.
The sparkling lights in the tree, I believe,
completed the magic that was Christmas Eve.
My eyelids were heavy, my breathing was deep,
secure and surrounded by love I would sleep
in perfect contentment, or so it would seem.
So I slumbered, perhaps I started to dream. …

A beautiful poem and especially for this time of year. Remember our troops abroad. I sent a card on the link on the right side of this blog; I encourage everyone to send one too. Merry Christmas!
Thanks to all our guys
we know you are there
we know what its about
and trust that it is in Gods hands
I heard this on the radio the other day and nearly lost it.
Two years ago I lost my brother in a roadside bombing in Iraq. He was home several times before his last tour, knew the true plight of the Iraqi people and believed that our cause was just. He understood his role in that cause and would not ask anyone to give more than he gave himself.
In the end, when our country called, he did his duty and died for us all.
I miss him so very much.
super nice poem. God bless all our troops!
btw there is another poem out there by the same name. More of a "Nite before Christmas" kind. This one is better though.
Beautiful. I have forwarded the page to everyone on my email list. I actually got a lump in my throat, and that ain't easy.
Very touching. It got me right from the beginning:
"My wife was asleep, her head on my chest,
my daughter beside me, angelic in rest."
I pictured myself in that very position. How lucky we all are to be spending the holidays at home with our families while our troops are off in harm's way a million miles from theirs.
I hope we all keep them and their loved ones in our thoughts and prayers, especially on Christmas day.
Wow, it almost brought me to tears. A very moving poem, so appropriate for the holidays. Thank you for posting it, Doug.
Beautiful and quite touching. Lest we forget that there are troops across oceans who haven't seen their famlies in too long and won't spend this Christmas with them either. Say a prayer for our soldiers and their families that they are soon reunited.
What a lovely poem! Our troops are certainly in our thoughts and prayers.
Oh what a sweet poem!
Merry Christmas to all our troops at home and abroad. Thank you all for your service and your sacrifice.
