Deja Vu - The Great Amnesty Debate Continues
I was looking over some of my last year’s posts on the AFP website and noticed this one from May 11, 2006. Not much changes, does it?
Senators Agree to Revive Immigration BillSenate leaders reached a deal Thursday on reviving a broad immigration bill that could provide millions of illegal immigrants a chance to become American citizens and said they’ll try to pass it before Memorial Day.
The agreement brokered by Senate Majority Leader Bill Frist, R-Tenn., and Minority Harry Reid, D-Nev., breaks a political stalemate that has lingered for weeks while immigrants and their supporters held rallies, boycotts and protests to push for action.
I think the graphic below from freakingnews illustrates the proposed “solution” to illegal immigration now being considered by our fine politicians in Washington…

Denny Wilson penned a great article about the so-called Immigration Bill (still) being considered by our elected “representatives.” They’re arguing about what form of amnesty to offer while they should be arguing about how high the border fences should be. Here’s just a sampling; you should read the entire article:
…We do not want a comprehensive immigration bill. We want a fence.
Build a fence! Erect a fence! Construct a fence! Put up a fence! How many ways do we have to say this until our elected “representatives” finally understand what we are saying?
Once we can control the influx of illegal aliens, then we can decide what to do with the ones we have here. If you have a hole in a boat, bailing the water out will not be effective until you fix the hole. …
The problem is serious, folks, and our Senators are “fiddling while Rome burns.” As Denny suggests, the recess is a great time to contact them and let them know - again - that we want a damn fence, not amnesty! He’s even provided contact information so there’s no excuse not to act. Do it!

Point well taken. This has gone on for so long I think we've lost sight of what is being proposed by our politicians. Poll after poll have shown that the vast majority of Americans want border security and not amnesty (opposing views are, I would guess, from illegal aliens already here).
Politicians have become responsive only to lobbyists and ignore the people they were elected to serve (and I don't mean the citizens of Mexico.) And they seem to believe (know?) that we're impotent to do anything about it. They thumb their noses at us and say, "There, there, we know best what is good for you and the country."
We had better wake up and get our collective fingers in the gigantic hole in the dike before it is too late. And all those elected "representatives" who are drooling over the additional 2 million votes they plan on picking up from absolved illegals? We say FIRE THEM!

OK, I emailed my "representatives" - Maybe it will do some good. I know that when it comes time for reelection, I won't vote for ANY incumbant. This is preposterous!
We are furious at the state of U.S. politics these days. All the dims want to do is carp at Bush because they want to win the White House and then be "in control" of everything. But we can't understand Bush's hard headed stance on making life nicer for Mexican illegals who "only" want to come to pick out lettuce.
Americans have made it abundantly clear we want border security, including a fence and armed guards (allowed to shoot) AND we are ademanrly against any kind of amnesty for law breakers. Yet these so-called elected representatives want to enact an amnesty program for illegals which will simply open the flood gates for 20 million more illegals who will also want amnesty. It is another way of saying "open borders" only with a nice sounding name.
We're for impeaching them all!
I agree with your friend. Build the fences, stop the influx, then get rid of the illegals already here. Difficult? Hell yes. Necessary? Of course! I really liked the leaky boat analogy. Well said!
All very well said. And despite congress' insistence on protecting farmers by actually encouraging Mexicans to jump the border, the majority of Americans would rather pay double or more for their freaking lettuce, picked by Americans or machines for crisake! Has Fox promised Bush and congress $10 million a piece to take all his poverty-stricken citizens after destroying Mexico's economy?

Roger, I think Bush believes in his heart that he can save Mexico from total economic collapse and that doing so will prevent the U.S. from the potential devastating fallout. It's a lofty goal and one I think is beyond our abilities. The dems, on the other hand, believe they can pick up votes by granting amnesty to 2 million potential voters.

The current state of affairs concerning how to deal with 12 million "law breakers" is purely semantic; rather than fix the problem, do the lazy, more "expedient" thing, eg., change the law and declare them all "law abiding guest workers." There. Problem solved. We no longer have an illegal alien problem in this country.
Next, let's tackle the illegal drug issue. Simply declare heroin, coke, crack, meth and pot legal, call them something that sounds nicer than "drugs", say "recreational products", and, "Shazaam!" Another national problem efficiently eradicated by our elected representatives. Damn, these guys are good!
We're on a roll. Let's take care of rape and incest! Legalize them, give them a sweet name and "Poof!" No more rapists or perverts crowding our weakened prison system. Only recreational sex among concenting adults (and children.)
That was easy, wasn't it? After all, those problems have been a thorn in our sides for too long. These aren't really "criminals". They are nice, hard working people wanting to relieve stress caused by our unfair economic and health care systems.
Sorry I ran on and on. I should run for Congress.

Yes Rachel, you should! I'd vote for you! Now, write all that down and send it to your "elected representatives" to let them see some true blue, American logic.
