Weekly Wrap-up - 2.08.08 Edition

Here are a few of the things that slipped through the proverbial cracks this week but are still worth mentioning:

1091762-1326959-thumbnail.jpgIf you’re afraid of being in a bank during a bank robbery, don’t go to the bank on Friday mornings between 9 a.m. and 11 a.m. …

TIVO Patent Upheld, Dish May Have to Disable DVR. The US Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit upheld a ruling by a lower court that Dish Network DVRs infringe upon TiVO’s patent on a ‘multimedia time warping system’. According to some analysts, this could not only make Dish liable for damages, it could force them to shut down their DVR service, harming their customers. The patent in question has already been reexamined once and the ruling on appeal (PDF) was unanimous.”…

Democrat Hillary Rodham Clinton said Sunday she might be willing to garnish the wages of workers who refuse to buy health insurance to achieve coverage for all Americans. The New York senator has criticized presidential rival Barack Obama for pushing a health plan that would not require universal coverage…

One out of four children involved in a divorce and custody litigation undergoes the so-called Parental Alienation Syndrome (PAS), consisting of the manipulation of children by the custodial parent, who incessantly tries to turn them against the other parent by arousing in them feelings of hatred and contempt for the target parent…

timescales_250.jpgCapturing images of fleeting events — a horse’s gallop, a bullet’s impact, an electron’s escape — is easy if you have the right equipment. Faster camera shutters used to be enough, but recently lasers have let physicists break the femto- and attosecond barriers, compressing the temporal resolution of images down to the time it takes light to cross a hydrogen atom…

When people bitched about the iPhone’s 3G sansness, one counter was that it didn’t matter, since AT&T’s 3G network was far from ubiquitous anyway. AT&T is stepping up on their end this year, planning on smothering another 80 cities in sticky, delicious 3Goodness for a total of 350 markets, and all of the top 100 cities. Topping it off, the whole thing will be HSUPA by mid-year, for snappier uploads in the 500-800 Kbps range (vs. HSDPA only, D standing for downlink). Next piece of the perfect mobile internet device puzzle: an iPhone that can use it

And finally…

A survey claims that having an office romance actually improves your quality of work. Researchers found the thrill of a fling “raised energy levels and led to better professional capacity.” One in five people quizzed by Italian sexologist Serenella Salomoni admitted to an affair at work. “We discovered that people who had an office romance said they were happier, more energetic and more productive.” Nearly twice as many women as men admitted to having a fling in the workplace, Dr Salomoni added. One in three owned up to having a relationship with a superior to enhance their career.

I like this format! Lots of info in a little space. Maybe a regular Friday feature?

My boss told me I needed to be more productive and I was unsure how I could possibly put out more than I already am. Now I see that the answer is to have an affair in the office.

My question is: Should I have it with my boss (an fairly attractive but older female) or should I shoot a little lower, say a department head or supervisor?

I may lose my DVR with Dish Network? Well that sucks!!!!

Maybe now iPhone users will quit whining that Apple didn't put G3 in the iPhone. Hello? There is hardly anyplace in the world to use it!!

Looks like maybe Apple kicked AT&T in the arse to get them to put more effort into fleshing out their network so G3 makes some sense for iPhone.

I see AT&T just allowed corporate accounts for iPhone users which will give them free access to 10,000 free hotspots. I think Jobs is pushing. Good!

What do you mean, Nigel, your boss is an "older" woman? Shame on you!

Are you trying to say "older" women aren't good candidates for office affairs?

I will have you know that what you call "older" is probably WAY more experienced and could show you a thing or two!

Wow, Tina, are you a little sensitive? Maybe he means she's like 70 and he is like 22 or something. Chill.

So the devil wants to garnish my wages if I don"t voluntarily sign on to her ripoff Hillary Health plan? Like hell! The Republicans blocked this before but with her as president, you know she would get Kennedy or some other socialists to carry it again and she would sign it and we would be stuck with a tax we don't want. Wake up America! Even Obama is a better choice!!!

I have suffered from PAS for 10 years. My mother divorsed my father when I was 12 and proceeded to tell me how awful he was all the time. She even made me feel guilty if I talked to him on the phone. What is sad is that I believed her! I didn't speak to my father until my 21st birthay and now I feel like she stole all those years from us. If you think you may suffer from this vile and abusive manipulation, please, please seek professional help. I did and it is helping a lot.

I'm just saying not all older women should be written off just because of their age. That's all.

I am 29, Tina. My boss is probably about 42-45. So you think I should consider her for my office fling? I am actually a little concerned that if I don't measure up in that area either, I'll be sacked. What is your advise?

I would be surprised if TIVO is able to bring about the death of DRV. A more likely scenario would have Dish appealing and the case moving ahead through the courts. Meanwhile, Dish and TIVO would settle, perhaps with TIVO licensing use of the technology or accepting a huge settlement. Dish would probably increase fees to recover costs.

How do you know nigel that your boss or any of the othe females in your office would be interested in a fling with you?

The same thing happened to me and my sister!! I didn't know there was a name for the feelings I have. My mother moved us to another state and made it hard for my father to find us. He always did, and she was always a basket case because she said he was so horrible. Turned out he wasn't but she did that to make us cut him out of our lives. It is the meanest thing anyone could have ever done to us. I know she is my mother and all but we both hate her now!! And we see our father all the time and he is NOTHING like she painted him to be. How can a parent do this to their own children?

February 8 | Unregistered CommenterCheryl

To answer that would be ungentlmanly of me.

February 8 | Unregistered CommenterNigel

Very cool summation. I would like to see you have more of these on a regular basis. It covers a lot of ground in a short space.

OK my bank was robbed today. It's Monday and the robbery took place at 2:30. Obviously, these guys are not reading this blog and don't know what the rules are! Geeeezzz!
