Oil Price's Impact on Dating
Oil surged to a record near $112 a barrel last week. The net effect was a whopping $88 fill-up for my Range Rover! And I’m not alone; big SUVs are prevalent in our area and, although El Dorado Hills’ residents may have a little more pocket change than some in the region, pump prices are definitely affecting local dating habits. Dinner and a movie? I’ll pick you up at eight. But a day-trip to the Bay area? How ‘bout we take your Honda, honey…
I took an informal survey at the pump last week and found a mixed bag; about half the guys filling their SUVs admitted to driving their wives’ or girlfriends’ cars on longer trips. The rest either said they wouldn’t let the price of petrol dictate their driving habits, or that they would have to do “something” if prices didn’t drop soon.
I suspect the majority are in pain. Or denial.

That is why we may trade our Escalade. It is expensive to drive, but I love it. I like being up high where I can see the road conditions ahead. And Jack likes me wrapped in all that metal in case I get hit. I am voting we keep it. So we spend an extra $90 a month for gas. It is worth it.
I fall into the "pain" category. Gas prices are killing me because I commute 70 miles each way to work and back in a Toyota SUV that gets lousy mileage. But I love everything else about it and would hate to part with it.
I think gas prices will come down a little, and drop further in the Fall. But unless they come WAY down which I doubt they will, I will probably trade into something in a year or so that gets better mileage. Maybe some kind of hybrid.
I hate that we are being raped by the Arabs on oil prices and our government is letting them do it!
My boyfriend's car is a muscle car and it gets bad milage so I suggest we drive my Civic when we go out to help save him some money since he pays for everything. It is only fair thing to do.
It's only going to get worse, believe me.
We should be getting some of that Iraqi oil we invested so much in saving. I hear we are "negotiating" for a break from the Iraqi government we are protecting. I still think all that oil is ours. Spoils of war when we conquered Iraq.
You mean "liberated", but I agree we should be getting some oil residuals.
"You buy dinner, I'll buy the gas" is making a comeback.
I haven't heard this angle, but it makes sense. Driving any distance in an SUV is a major expense these days. And aren't you tired of the oil companies telling us how lucky we are in the States because drivers in London pay more? I know I am!!
Interesting observation. hadn't considered the impact on dating. But it is affecting all of us. Hopewe get some relief soon!
Must be your big red Rover, right?
